The system has detected a problem with one or more installed IDE/SATA hard disks

One more question, I think unhide tool is great, but I still have a problem Control Panel->Administrative Tools is still empty. Do you know what to do to fix this?

I had to create an account simply to thank you, johnb35! :) I used Malwarebytes and the unhide program that you suggested and my computer seems to be running just fine now. Thank goodness! I was ready to cry. :( haha. So thank you! <3

Well thank you. Glad it all worked out for you. Just a warning though, its still posible that you may have remnants of infections still on your machine without posting the logs requested. Most of the time combofix is needed to fully remove the infections.

Hello, thanks for the advice so far. I installed and ran Rkill.scr and MalwareBytes, scanned my computer with a quick scan and came up with virus warnings. Cleaned the checked problems and restarted my computer to complete the process. However when it started up again my screen is still black, my Interface is still white and not Windows Vista like it should be, but if I scan again in MalwareBytes it says everything is fixed.

I'm confused, I'll post the logs for Malware and Hijack This now...

Hello Johnb35, boy I am glad I came across this thread, you are a saint and explain everything so clearly!

In any case I downloaded malwarebytes and ran it. While it was running the first time the computer suddenly shut down and rebooted before it could finish the scan and remove selected problems. I ran Rkill and waited until I got a log which is below.

Rkill Log:

Rkill was run on 06/09/2011 at 1:07:47.
Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium

Processes terminated by Rkill or while it was running:

C:\ProgramData\hsRITIwubRlhk.exe
C:\windows\SysWOW64\attrib.exe
C:\windows\SysWOW64\attrib.exe
C:\windows\SysWOW64\attrib.exe

Rkill completed on 06/09/2011 at 1:07:54.
________________________________________________________________

After this I ran malwarebytes again and this time it finished and I was able to remove the viruses. Here is the log from malwarebytes:

After this I installed HijackThis and ran "scan and save log." However I can't seem to save my log file it will only scan when I press this. When it begins scanning this message appears: "For some reason system denied write access to the Hosts file. If any hijacked domains are in this file, HijackThis may NOT be able to fix this. If that happens you need to edit the file yourself. To do this, run: notepad C:\windows\system32\etc\hosts and find the line(s) HijackThis reports and delete them. Save the file as 'hosts' and reboot.
________________________________________________________________
Here is what I found in the hosts file when opened with notepad:

# Copyright (c) 1993-2009 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

# localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.
# 127.0.0.1 localhost
# ::1 localhost

This does not seems to have much and is a generic message right? So how can I get the log saved from HijackThis. My computer is running fine now and the virus seems to be gone, I just want to double check with you that I'm in the clear.

Very much appreciated, again you are a saint mate!

Can't load malware bytes to deal with "system has detected . . .IDE/SATA" virus

Hi,

I have the same problems as the other users who got the error message "system has detected . . . IDE/SATA hard disks, except that my computer won't let me install Malware Bytes.

I am able to download Malware Bytes and save the exe file to my desktop, but when i try to install the file, after the install program starts to run and extract files, i get what looks like a fake error message saying that the setup has failed. When i X out of that dialog box the Malware bytes install program rolls back and doesn't finish installation.

I'm pretty sure that either my daughter or i rebooted the computer after getting the virus.

Is there anything i can do to fix this?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Rschwarz - This is a nasty little virus we got I'd recommend reading every post in this thread because it's going to help us all out a lot. Here is the answer to your question which Johnb35 answers in the first page of this thread.

If for some reason Malwarebytes will not install or run please download and run Rkill.scr, Rkill.exe, or Rkill.com but DO NOT reboot the system and then try installing or running Malwarebytes. If Rkill (which is a black box) appears and then disappears right away or you get a message saying rkill is infected, keep trying to run rkill until it over powers the infection and temporarily kills it. Once a log appears on the screen, you can try running malwarebytes or downloading other programs.

rschwarz,

Please do the following.

If for some reason Malwarebytes will not install or run please download and run Rkill.scr, Rkill.exe, or Rkill.com but DO NOT reboot the system and then try installing or running Malwarebytes. Let me know if it still won't work and I'll have you run another program.

djbulgogi,

Please right click on hijackthis and click on run as admin, If the run as admin option doesn't appear then press and hold the shift key while right clicking on hijackthis and the option will apear.

Also go ahead and do the following. Please disable any active virus software before running combofix. If you AVG antivirus, it must be uninstalled before running combofix.

Download and Run ComboFix
If you already have Combofix, please delete this copy and download it again as it's being updated regularly.
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.

In your next reply please post:
  • The ComboFix log
  • A fresh HiJackThis log
  • An update on how your computer is running

Kyledoubleyou,

Please download and run unhide.exe. This should restore your missing desktop and files/folders, etc...

Also please do the following.

Download and Run ComboFix

johnb35,

I followed your instructions, but i couldn't get MalWare Bytes to install.

I ran rKill and got a notepad message saying that rKill was run and completed, but it didn't list any processes terminated by rKill.

When i tried to run MalWare Bytes after getting the rKill notepad, i got the same fake error messages i got before and it rolled back the Malware file installation.

What do you suggest? thanks so much for your willingness to help!

Yes, shift + right click and running it as the admin did the trick.

I ran combofix but had some troubles with Norton Internet Security. I shutdown combofix before it could start running until I dealt with NIS. I downloaded a Norton Remover Tool because I couldn't delete it from add/remove program in the control panel for some reason. This cleared Norton Internet Security. What internet security would you suggest I download after I have cleared my computer of an malware?

So I rebooted, ran combofix and all worked well.

Update on Computer Status

Seems to running fine overall, definitely not bogged down anymore. I'm getting some minor spikes in online games I didn't have before but I think that has more to do with an internet connection to a server rather than my laptop.

Much appreciated!!!

Johnb35,

Ah okay I was just having some troubles closing the program. It kept denying me access from closing the program so I just scrapped it :)

Downloading Avast right now, thanks for the suggestion.

All the logs looked okay?

Your logs look good. Let me know if you have any more issues.

my computer seems to be virus free but, I can't get the files unhidden.

I ran combofix, hijackthis, and malwarebytes (no problems found with malware). I tried to paste the logs for combofix and hijackthis, but everytime i do, it freezes up the message box.

I ran unhide.exe with Avira enabled and disabled, but neither worked. i also tried to get to the profile folder to uncheck hidden files, but i don't know how to get to the profile folder/file. Can you help?
