i have heard it is alot easier to hear where the person is comin from by using headphones, does this include like ipod hearphones, or is it just the big bulky ones or what??
also can any1 recommend some good ones to me, thanks lee

iPod headphones are ok if you haven't got any decent proper headphones. But what you have to remember with bulky proper headphones is they offer padding around the ears, they sit comfortably, they have better quality speakers within them and they last longer and produce better sound quality wise. I find that playing with headphones is ten times better than playing with speakers. You hear the footsteps so crisp and from so far away people almost think you wall hack.

Where are you located? Just so we know which websites to suggest :).

yeh, phones are great, i stopped a guy from nifing me from behind yesterday at the last second because i heard his footsteps. i'd recommend the big bulky ones deffinatly, better sound quality and a wider range of frequencies. Also proper bulky headphones are great for listening to music on ur ipod aswell, especially on car journeys. So theyd b a gud investment :)

Headphones are crucial if you play in scrims or matches. With a good headset you can hear which way they are coming from, instead of just footsteps from... which speaker? I don't know, I can't tell. That's why you use a headset. I strongly suggest the DSP-500s - they were made a couple years back so they aren't the newest/best ones you can get but they are about $50USD on amazon.com. They are great, I've had em for 3+ years and I haven't had any problems with them. Comes with a built in sound card and plugs right into a USB port. They are great. The best when they came out.

Edit: Do it...

Yes headphones = the best on FPS games....clunky feet = easy kills.

I use this pair...

Perfect for music comfy as hell and does a sweet job at blocking out sounds\ and lets not forget...perfect for CS. I been using this pair for almost a year now.

Best part is all sweet water products come with a 1 year warrenty...I happen to live near the store as well but they ship anywhere.

Yep, once you start gaming with headphones (especially ones with mic attached), you feel like you're playing with a missing finger without them. Much easier to communicate and hear enemy movement with headphones, especially in maps like Italy and Cbble, where hardwood floors are prevalent ;).

Not even just Italy and Cbble, annny map. When people jump in the vents in Assault you can hear it and just spam the vents. Every map it comes in handy to have a headset, you'd be surprised how much you DONT hear, and dont even realize, until you have a headset.

What about just turning a good 7.1 surround sound to the max?

Kent.

Thats what I was going to say! If you cant hear the footsteps your sound aint loud enough! :P

Nah, seriously, binaural hearing. THIS is the best example I can find, there is a better one with matches but I cant find it. Lets see your 7.1 system do better then that. (requires headphones)

EDIT: Found it, Here.

Definitely wear headphones when playing fps man, its a no-brainer. I have been doing that ever since I started playing games.

I found my 5.1 system to be dead useful as can tell which speaker is making what noise despite the fact they're in front of me. I've killed a few people who've crept up behind me and dodged a fair few.

i got my gf some seinheiser headphones for her bday to listen to music with, they cost 30 quid which is about $60. they are really good, i would recomend them.

Good thing I don't wanna talk to anyone on the phone or the door :P

Normally my attitude unless I have a delivery coming that I'm really eager to get. Then I get really annoyed at myself for having not heard the postie (postman) delivering my crap :p.

It's mainly the sound card that helps you hear where people are coming from, especially with the X-Fi. With others it's hard to tell if they are in front or behind you.

I think most gamers would at the very least have a decent sound card, and anyway most packaged computers these days come with a sound card.
