yo

i got this desktop in my house that i want to do some SERIOUS upgrading ( new mobo, new hd, new processor, new RAm)

it is a compaq presario AMD k6.

ya ya i know its old, and i want to upgrade so please dont be like " its not worth it, just buy an intirely new computer" because with me upgrading this, it would be below my budget!

but i am not sure if these new parts on new egg would fit this compaq.

what parts do i need so it can fit

( i would like 1 gig ram, 2800 processor, 120 gig hd)

please no flaming:rolleyes:

I know you don't want to hear it buuuuuuuut. What you are talking about is basically buying a whole new computer. What would make sense for you is purchase a part a month type situation and put it together once you have a complete PC.

After you replace the mobo and CPU and ram there is not much left besides add in cards (video, sound, etc.)

Edit:

Also thought I'd add that you would most likely want to purchase a new PSU. Your talking about a whole new machine.

new mobo, new hd, new processor, new RAm
im sorry to reign on your parade but these are the core components of a new system, the main being mobo and CPU.... thats not an upgrade, that IS an entirely new system, but i dont think you realise it....

Seeing as you tralk of "upgrading" then your gonna be spending a lot of time inside the computer case, so building a new system is not gonna be a million miles away from this, and 1Gb RAM, AMD Athlon XP 2800+, and a Seagate 120Gb HDD is not gonna det you back anything mroe than a couple hundred

What country are you in so we know where to be looking and also, it would be nice to know your specific budget....

*EDIT* - beaten to the post by seconds, dammit....

i live in the good ol USA, CT...

i know replacing the mobo and those core components is basically getting a whole new comp, i dont mind that

but i just need to have a better computer at a very cheap price

it seems that its cheaper than 600 ( which is the price of building a whole new computer in pieces off of new egg)

You can get a whole machine for cheaper than that at Wally World, for goodness' sake.

A) Decide your absolute budget and stick to it.
B) Decide your needs (not wants) and fit them into your budget. If there is a little wiggle room, then look at wants.
C) You are moving up from a Pentium-class computer-- a second-hand PIII would do you just as well as a top-of-the-line P4 or Athlon right now... think about purchasing a used system and saving up for the ultra-mega-build from heck later on down the road.
D) Use the K6 to build a firewall appliance using Smoothwall or ClarkConnect.

happens to me all the time, doesn't help that I still don't type correctly and sometimes say a lot though

And just to stress the point of a new build, it's basically what you're already doing, but if you want to look in the 500 or so range, check out what kind of deals are going on at like Best Buy or Staples or whatever stores you have like that cause it's hard to build one better at that price when the prebuilts have a warranty

I'm not sure that you are getting what we are saying when you say "gut the compaq" What is inside that Compaq that you will be keeping? nothing as you are replacing every single component. Also you might as well replace the case as it will come with a PSU that you will need (cheap PSU though). If you are planning on replacing all those parts then get "gutting the compaq" off the mind ;).

You can purchase on OK computer for $450. It is never really worth building your own when you are only looking to spend $450. Honestly if this is all you are willing to spend forget about upgrading your Compaq as you want to replace tooooooo much. Buy a cheap computer and forget about building unless you are looking at throwing more cash at it.

so your budget is $430 USD and you want to bukild your own system...... from scratch...??

sorry, im gettin a bit confused with all differnt peopel asking questions at the same time.....?? please clarify.

I agree with Blue, If that is your budget, and your PC is that old, you are better off getting a special from a big box dealer than trying to build your own. If you indeed do "gut the Compaq", you'll just be saving the case/keyboard/mouse and will still have to shell out for a copy of windows...right?

Look in the papers and flyers...you will find a better deal than buying individual parts.

You will get better quality by building...but that comes at a price.

It is not that hard ;). Simply read his posts and ignore everyone else.

1. That is a new computer
2. To upgrade any given component that you mentioned would require getting all the other components, which, as mentioned, is a new computer

i know replacing the mobo and those core components is basically getting a whole new comp, i dont mind that
Now you're contradicting yourself ;)

well my budget is 430.

It is easy to build a new computer for the budget but from what I have experienced is that it is usually no better then one you can buy pre-built for the same price. Just to make that point a bit more clear. If you have no experience with building you might want to buy a pre-built setup however it is always nice to learn and building can be rewarding. I always recommend that folks buy pre-built in that price range for reasons I've already stated.

IMO, if you are looking to build your own, which i don't blame you. i'm in the same boat. even if i can get the money too, it's not gonna be enough. that's why i like the idea someone else posted which is what i have been doing. just buy a part here and there until you have enough

but, just so you know, xoxide.com has computer cases that come wit keyboard, mouse, speakers and power supply for like $60
i haven't looked into the rest yet, as i'm about to have to go, but i will look around a bit for you later.
i designed a computer to build for my autn for a little under $400. completely new too.
only things missin was monitor and windows

lemme know if you're still interested in building your own

And if there is one thing you dont upgrade, it'll bottleneck all the rest (or it just wont work, like if you dont get a new PSU).
