Thermal Limits, Distance to TJ Max ?

I know this has probably been beat to death in the past, but can someone explain why Real Fan has Distance to TJ Max.

Thermal Specs for my QQ9650 according to Intel are 71.4c.

Seems simple enough, but Real Temp includes “Distance to TJ Max”, which seems to indicate that 100c is the absolute upper limit. I’ve read other posts that state that a Core 2 Quad will begin throttling at 75c and shut itself down at 85c.

And then there’s this article that goes so deep into technical jargon that I can’t make any sense of it.

Should I just stick to 71.4c as a limit, or is there a fairly simple way to determine a safe upper limit? Just confused.

That's what's driving me crazy. If I set TJ Max to 71 then it resets the current temp for that core back by 29c and distance to TJ Max stays the same.
I can't seem to get current core temp at an accurate setting AND get TJ Max set to 71. There must be a reason or something I don't understand.
