Thermal paste/pads?

I bought an AMD Athlon 64 2800+ (Retail) the other day for my new computer. The heatsink/fan it comes with has a little pad on the bottom of it, which I think is a thermal pad.

My question is, are the pads effective? Is it worth taking it off and applying paste?
 
The pads are usually good enough for what 99% of people are doing. If you're going to remove the thermalpad you might as well get an aftermarket cooler :)
 
With the pad you should be fine. Just monitor your temps at the begining and see if theres any problems. If so, remove it and add soem as5.
