Thermal paste question

I would most certainly think so, but if you're debating on whether to buy thermal paste, it would be well worth your money to get good stuff.
 
lol, i already have that processor, and im try to figure out if this gray junk on the bottom of the heatsink is the thermal paste cuz i never installed/tookout a proc, ill post a pic in a minute

yeah it is thermal paste, so you can install it with that or with a better aftermarket one, if you're not going to overclock, you'll probably be fine with the stock heatsink and thermal paste, but if you are planning on oc-ing or just have the extra bucks, a better heatsink and thermal paste is definitely beneficial
 
I overclock my processor some, but not excessively and I use the stock HS and fan and paste. All of the retail processors come with pre-applied thermal compound. You have a nice CPU, you should be able to overclock adequately with stock HSF and paste, of course only of you have good case airflow.
 
retail = completely ready, with heatsink and all
oem = just a processor, u need to buy the heatsink and thermal paste.
by the way, of youre o/cing get silver 5 and a better hsf

Its better to have that, but its not always necessary. Im running my cpu oc'd 220Mhz on stock cooling and its only running at 23C.
 
necessary is something you determine. i think its necessary just because temps will be lower, system will be more stable, and overclock may be higher.
also, extra cooling extends cpu life as you see in cpu101. read it!
 
well I like to go on the safe (cool) side so I installed a 120mm zalman on the last comp I built (p4 dual core) and am not even thinking of an oc

temperature isnt the only factor, and also your sensor may be wrong. the sensor isnt right at the center of the heat, the sensor is in the socket i believe, depending on your motherboard.
what are the temps in the room your computer is in? 23 Celsius is... reallly low. that must be a really high airflow fan or somethin...
