Thermal paste under an Intel CPU...

Hey guys, my motherboard is being RMAd, and during that time i have found thermal paste under my Q6600! First of all, can this cause any harm to my system once i turn it on? and second, how do i get it off plus when theres little thermal paste in the small circles that draws power from the motherboard. I dont want to have to buy another CPU as i am broke, please help me.. Thanks for any helps and tips guys!

I had the same issue with the same cpu, oddly enough. I was using arctic Silver, and contrary to popular belief, it is conductive. If you are RMAing your board, clean anypaste off any contacts... they'll say **** off if they see it on there.

with your CPU, WD40 or denatured alcohol work best, just use a small amount if you are using WD40 and make sure and clean it off with a paper towel and some alcohol. I'd be careful, because I fried my q6600 that way, with thermal grease on the bottom. and heck, I bought it when it was in the $279 dollar range.

use rubbing alchohol to clean off your cpu, as some is conductive, and how hard would it be to clean it off anyway?

Yeah, go to your local discount drug store(riteaid, medicine shoppe, walgreens, walmart etc) and pick up 97% isopropyl alcohol, commonly known as rubbing alcohol. You want the 97% stuff as its only 3% water, vs the 70% stuff is 30% water

Naw, cause rubbing alcohol is non conductive, and evaporates super quick also. It should be able to dissolve the thermal paste and then just wipe it up with q-tips;)

Yeah, q-tips are awesome for computers, dont make much lint and get into the small nooks and crannies to clean stuff, better than cotton balls;)

I like q-tips on the processor and sometimes to clean my ram heatsinks, but if your like me and have lots of microfiber cloths laying around, when used with alcohol they work wonders.
