thermaltake sonic tower

anyone used this beast yet, decided to get it for the new cpu, seems to get a good write up and with the rest of the cooling in my case i'm hoping it will keep temps nice and low with passive cooling only

for the money, you can get something far better.

look around for either a Scythe Infinity, an Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro, Gigabyte G-Pro Cooler or if you can find a site with one in stock, a Sunbeam Tuniq Tower, as they are the dogs.....

for the price i cant get better, picking this up for a tenner so its a bit of a bargain really, and as i said its already purchased so recommnending other things is not really much help, rather after any comments on if people have used it before or not

aye but would defeat the object of passive cooling ;)

its a temp solution for the moemnt as im picking upa titan amanda off a friend on the cheap next month, which truly is the dogs danglys of cooling :)

nope. TEC + Air = Problems.....

i would have simply bought a Freezer 64 Pro or a Scythe Infinity and save money in the end... not to mention temps.

Still much better off sticking a 120mm fan in the middle, passive cooling never works to well unless you have really really good airflow in your case. Just stick the 120mm fan on lower rpms and you won't be able to hear it if you are going for silence.

the case has excellent airflow at the moment, case is the P180 and so there are two 120mm fans already on the case near to the CPU its self so that should provide ample airflow for the passive cooling to keep things low enough

the sonic tower comes well recommended for its passive cooling abilities, with the Antec p180 cases which is also known for its impressive cooling it should be adequate enough to keep the temps down just fine.

Ah ok, I still say experiment :P

Run it passively for a bit and then stick a 120mm in the middle and see if your temps drop a lot.

well so long as the temps are of a reasonable level then i'm not too fussed about bringing them down for the hell of it. This heatsink is damn big and so i think from my estimates that once its installed it whould have a 120mm fan on two side only a couple of CM away, if that.

Will let you know how it gets on though :)

look, a 120mm fan in the middle will definitely help with temps.

just pick up a fairly basic 120mm fan and shove it in the middle.

Well.. you can try running it completely passive... if that fails, you could put a 120mm Antec Tri cool fan on the lowest speed in the midle of it :) ( very silent when it runs at that speed =] )
Keep it updated please, im curious now :)

and as i am trying to say it will have two 120mm fans on either side of it as a part of the case design in very close proximity. The sonic tower does a damn good job as a passive cooler, two 120mm near it should be more than adequate. Do you seriously think that on a single core Athlon 64 three 120mm fans would not be overkill!

listen guys he has said he wants to run passive, so why are we arguing with him. That TT will passive fine, sure if you stick a 120mm it will cool down, but so will sticking water cooling, or phase cooling, but the fact is these suggestions are not what he want :D
It will passive fine,
what is the rig setup?

cheers apj :)

The rigs gonna be an Atlhon 64 4000+, 1 gig mem, radeon X850 pro, bout five HDD :D

all housed in the p180 which currently has a 120mm in the psu bay, two 120mm outflow around the cpu area, 1 120mm at the front as intake and another 80mm on the VGA duct. So far its near silent so just trying to keep it that way :)

put the HDD in to the seperate cage at the base of the case instead so its away from the GPU and CPU. The 120mm fan thats in the bottom is between psu and HDD so it allows air to flow in that area to cool both. That way theres nothing blocking the airflow route across the CPU :)
