These speeds look right?

Hey guys...do these speeds look right for a Sata 2 external hard drive?

I think it took around 1 hour 25 mins to move all that data from my main hdd to this external one

Just seems slow...

That is slow...mine transfers at 60MB per second almost every time. I have just normal WD drives...nothing special. One is a basic 160GB W/ 8MB cache for backup and a 320GB WD Blue W/ 16MB cache for the main.

Hi mate,

Thanks for replying!

Im not sure whats causing the slowdown? Its either my main hard drive..or my External drive...

My main drive Seagate 250Gb Sata2 16mb cache
external - WD 500Gb Sata 2 16mb cache (Usb 2.0)

external - WD 500Gb Sata 2 16mb cache (Usb 2.0)

Wouldnt the USB slow the transfer rate down?

+ Wouldnt the size of the file determine the speed of the transfer and also the file type wouldnt that change it? I'm just throwing ideas at you here see if it helps :P

Something is still not right...this is a shot transferring to a 4 year old WD 5400 RPM passport USB external that only works about 50% of the time I plug it in. It's junk...almost threw it away the other day.

It still pulls 30MB per second consistently. And my processor is under 100% load.

something is bad there! try using eSata? different USB port? something is real fishy about that speed.

Esata? nope thats out.

tried diffrent USB ports and still the same,Btw im using the ports on the back of my mobo.

you may not have the drivers updated or the usb ports might not be 2.0, only 1.1

another reason it could be slower is because it is more files. it takes me about 10 min to transfer 60gb of movies from one hdd to another. but when i upgraded to windows 7, it took about 3 hours to transfer 70gb which was about 30,000 files.

Well i cant update my motherboards chipset drivers....it just throws me an error about the os not been comp...msi have not made decent drivers for my board yet for 7,vista ones dont work.

Now this is wierd,i just moved a 1.2Gb file to my external drive and got 64mb sec transfer time?

wth :D

how old is the hdd in question? it might have trouble reading/writing on some areas of the disk.

hmm,not very old actualy, maybe about 7-8 months old...however i hope it doesnt fail because the warrenty is void!

Not by me....they stuck the warrenty sticker on this sticky plastic cover they put on the back of the drive casing which is glued on,well it came off and of course ripped the little sticker with it :(

I think they do that on purpose!
