thin n slim desktop: the good n the bad

I've been a laptop only user, and have never owned a desktop. So I've been thinking about bridging over by buying a slim/thin desktop. I realize that a bigger box desktop would allow for a cheaper build, but I'm not sure thats enough for me to buy it. I do photo editing and alot of multitasking, but I don't need an insane power house machine.

What are the disadvantages to owning a slim/thin desktop? HP and Dell have some great options. And seeing that I already connect my laptop to another monitor, I think maybe slim/thin desktop would be great, as the monitor is great already.

You can bulid yourself a small form factor desktop. If you do not need more than 1 expansion card then a micro ITX build can suite you well. Disadvantages of slim desktop computers are that they are a pain to cooler as the size restriction does not allow you to use full tower heatsinks and large fans.
 
^ I agree with all that, as it answers the question and gives an alterantive.

Here's another. An example of a case size that's very suitable for your description - if you build. The title says 'Mid tower" but it's really a bit smaller than normal mid towers and not a lot bigger than a slimline.

And the part about less than 8" video cards isn't accurate either since over 9" is attainable, but photo editing and multitasking doesn't require a vc.

The Silverstone Sugo may also be an option for you.
But you first have to decide that building it yourself is the best thing to do. :)
 
The problem with slim/ thin desktop is the PSU & video card.
If you are doing a lot of photo editing, you may want a slightly powerful video card, where the micro-atx psu from those desktop could restrick you.
 
Problem with the slim desktops is exactly what (diduknowthat) has said there cooling is pretty crap in other words, witch will lead to more problems overheating, lack off pc performance etc.

building one to fit your needs, if you have the time you will learn alot from it personally ive never build one but something tell me i might soon lol ive already upgraded most parts on my pc witch ive ended up spending twice as much...

Most people on here will help you choose the right components and will try there best to get your the best possible pc at the right prices. i could run up a build price with componets for you if you would like and you can compare ideas with other members. You will come out with a much better pc for the same about off money ask anyone on here.
