Things to look for on a motherboard

Hi guys,

I am new to the forum. Sorry if I asked a very noob question here.

1) So I am thinking about changing my motherboard for my gaming PC, but I am just wondering what I have to look for on a motherboard. In other words, what determines how powerful or how good a motherboard is? I will be overclocking, but not extremely, so maybe that is something to be considered as well?

2) I am thinking about changing my CPU together with my motherboard. I am looking for an AMD CPU, but I am just wondering what determines whether a CPU is powerful or not? One of the questions I always had is if there is a CPU that is 6 core but 2.4 Ghz VS. a CPU that is quad core but 3.0 Ghz, which one is better? like is more cores better than higher Ghz?

Also for AMD APUs, are they that much slower than CPUs because they are mainly a CPU combined with a graphics card?

Oh and my PC is mainly for gaming and I have a Asus GTX 660 Ti OC edition card.

Just for FYI,

Whenever you have a few questions about a system, its always easier for you and everyone else if you create one thread about it.

The main concern would be brand... Gigabyte, Asus, Asrock, MSI would be your best brands.

The next concern would be what processor you want to use, then you can determine what motherboard you need. If you only plan on running 1 video card then you don't need a board with more than one gpu slot.

Oh i see... so basically if the motherboard is not super old, and there are enough slots for me on the board, and my CPU is compatible with it, then I am good? Not many other major things to look at?

Coolermaster HAF922 Mid Tower

ASUS M4A87TD Motherboard

AMD Athlon II Quad Core 3.0Ghz

Coolermaster V8 CPU cooler

ASUS GTX 660 Ti OC edition

4 4GB (total 16GB) Kingston DDR3 RAM

PSU 650W or 750W forgot which one

1TB western digital HDD

Do you know the exact model number of power supply you have? Just making sure you have a good unit.
 
Nice system you have mate. Are you using a 64 bit OS?

Hope you have a good PSU to protect your system.
 
Can you suggest me a mobo, too?
I prefer Gigabyte, because a 3-pin fan is flexible in Gigabyte models.
I use only one fan(external 120'' in the back of the case) and all my devices are fanless.
So I m looking for a cool mobo, do you have something good in mind? :)
