Think it's the Heat...

Lately, whenever I load a game or anything slightly processor-intensive, my comp. has been rebooting from the bios splash screen. from the other threads i hve read about this, it sound's like the problem is that the cpu is overheating. if this is the case, anyone know of a good socket 478 fan for the cpu in my sig? if heat isn't the problem, any clue to what it is?

Check out the Tuniq Tower and the Scythe Ninja. They're both HUGE. The Tuniq cools a bit better while the Ninja is quieter.

The majority of the time, if the system shutdowsn down due to an overheating CPU, you'll see a message upon the next POST that says something to that regard. Before getting a new HSF, make sure it's not something as simple as just applying new thermal compound.

I can't tell what the temp. is during the game that makes it restart, but before that, the temp. on the cpu is 23 degrees celcius un-oc-ed, and the case temp. is 27 degrees celcius. I have done a POST test after it has rebooted, and it hasn't said anything, but i'll go check again.

23*C at idle is fine. Unless the game causes it to up the CPU temp by tens' of *C, it shouldn't be shutting down. The best way to see an accurate idle CPU temp is to Enter BIOS and go to the Hardware Monitoring area. In BIOS, your CPU runs at full speed (no scaling), but it's under no load. Let it run for a few minutes and if it stays even, you're probably good.

Could you list your full system specs? If the CPU/TC/HSF work out to be ok, my next thought would be a faulty PSU perhaps.

If you think heat is a issue use a stress test program and monitor your temps to see how high they are getting too.The stress test will load your cpu while you use a temp. monitoring program to watch the temps.

23c CPU temp??? What cooler and program are you using? Sometimes different programs give you different temps. I get as much as 10c difference with two programs running at the same time. If your CPU is 23c something might be wrong and it's OC'ed! Only high end cooler will you acheive temps like that(serious liquid cooling or an ice cube sitting directly on your CPU) That is too cool for it run with a normal fan and heat sink. I looked in majorgeeks forum and they have posted double that temp is normal (mid 40's) It might be something like your voltage to the CPU, maybe it don't have enough power and is only working at a fraction of the normal speed. Thats weird...CPU too cool? Good luck!
