I'm currently running a few old dell machines.
One is a Demension 4500 P4 2GHz 1GB RAM Radeon 9250 PCI. Its a bit too slow for anything other than basic internet usage.
The other is a Optiplex GX280 P4 3GHZ 2GB RAM Radeon 9250 PCI. It runs half life 2 pretty well and seems fast enough for my daily use. It does has some issues though. I had two of these machines, I gutted the extra and ditched the case keeping all the hardware.The machine has issues freezing/restarting/shuting down out of the blue. I have records of thermal error in bios. I checked everything on the MB and noticed the four prong connector for the power had a slight brown burn mark in it. So I switched the power supply out with the one from the other case. And also removed CPU and re-installed new HS Compound. Same issues still accured. So I swaped over the extra MB and CPU to the current case. This one has some kind of fan issue. The main case fan just goes NUTS. It sounds like the thing is going to take off!! I can't even use it being that noisey.
I've ran out of ideas on how to fix it, If it was a simple fix I'd be happy but I'm sure it would be too much money to dump into a machine thats from 2004...
I think to myself I want to build a new machine again like I use to ten something years ago...But i've been sooo out of the loop I wouldn't know where to start. On top of that I would have to purchase a fresh full copy of Windows 7 and I'm sure thats a few hundred dollars alone!!
I know with my dell machines I can run any Dell WinXP disc on any of them and it works just fine. Therefor I was just thinking about buying a used dell machine that has all the discs already included....
What do you guys think I should do??
