How would Vista Ultimate run on the computer in my sig? I don't know if I want to buy Vista now or buy a new computer. If I buy a new computer most likely it will come with Vista right?

My sister just bought a laptop with Vista and it came with a cd but it said upgrade. Does that mean you can only use it once? Say I wanted to do a fresh install, would I be able to use that type of cd?

I wouldn't buy a new computer just because of Vista.
 
Go to window's website and download the vista tool it will tell you if you are able to do it and what it will rank.
 
your xp installation was probably full of spyware or something, because xp is much, much faster. both in my observations as well as every benchmark i've seen on the web.

It should run fine (but slower than XP). However, if I were you, I would double that RAM to 2 gigs or at least 1.5 gigs just to have a bit more cushion. Not a "must do", but a "would be nice to do". It also depends on what you will be using Vista for.
 
I will play games on it from time to time but not all the time. Whenever I am in the mood I will play games. I will also be used for internet, music, watching movies, stuff like that.

I have been thinking about getting more ram. I don't know if I want to get more ram now or wait and get a new computer.

How long do you think there will be no more software compatibility issues?
 
overall, the pc could easily run vista.
but, it depends on what you want to do.

you say you play games occasionall. what kinds of games?
if there newer, resource demanding games you might notice a difference.

xp only needed a minimum of 64mb of ram, vista needs a minimum of 512mb of ram. the difference in free memory might have a noticable effect on gaming since you only have 1gb. i had 1gb when i went from xp to vista and noticed a big difference in Oblivion.


as for system/software compatibility issues, only time will tell.
64bit hardware has been out since 2004 and theres still issues with it because it seems that companies are taking there good old time when it comes to making stuff to take advantage of 64bit.
 
Right now I mainly play BF2142 and GRAW.

I may just upgrade to a new pc so I can get a Directx 10 card. I don't know what I'm going to do yet.
