Thinking of a New Build

I have a 2005 HP Desktop computer. I'm starting to notice more and more that it is sluggish and choppy. I am far from a heavy user. This home computer is mostly for internet, some video, email, MS Office.

I have a Pentium 4, 3GHz, 1.5GB RAM, IDE, running Windows XP Pro.

If I build a new computer how much if any of this computer can I salvage? Obviously my peripherals are still good. Can I slap a new mother board and power supply in this case?

I want to run Windows 7.

Or am I better off just starting from scratch.
 
If you want to run windows 7, it would be better for you to start from scratch. However, for what you use your system for, the one you have now should suffice for awhile yet. When was the last time a fresh install was done? Have you been doing some general maintenace like running Ccleaner and defragging your hard drive? Windows will slow down over time and only a fresh install will fix the issue.
 
I had a problem a couple months ago where my anti-virus expired and I was unprotected for a week or so. I had some nasty stuff that wasn't totally solved until I visited the Computer Forum just tonight. I finally have it all cleaned out and Norton 360 fully operational so I think I am ok now. But I know this computer is in its twilight years, and I'm starting to think about something new. I have tinkered inside my computer before but I have never done a full build myself.

My computer makes alot of noise. I think the power supply is running in high mode more than it should. Certainly more than it did when it was new.
 
If you have the money for a new build, go for it. There are many of us here that build systems, including me. I have my own computer repair business and build/troubleshoot systems. It's really simple and educating. Just ask and we'll offer you assistance and pointers on how to do it.

I have never defragged, but I looked at it today and it says its only 7% fragmented and it wasn't needed.
 
What about using Ccleaner? That should speed up your system if you haven't ran it before.
