Thinking of building a computer

In time i plan to build my own computer (hopefully in the summer when i have finished a pc hardware support course and i have more knowledge)

how hard is it to do ?
my only concern is buying parts and the they aint compatible etc

How much do you think im looking at to build a computer?

for general use doing things like

downloading
storing music\pictures
doing uni work
surfing the internet
etc

not too bothered about gaming just a starndard graphics card would do!!

can any 1 reccomemnd a package that i could buy.... making sure all harware etc is compatable or maybe suggest some websites that are good for reading and learning!!

like i say i got a little knowledge but there is more that i dont know!!

Are you looking at just building a computer or do you need peripherals as well (keyboard, mouse, monitor) Do you need software? What is your budget?

For downloading ideally you need a fast ethernet card however if your router doesn't support those speeds there's no use in getting a fast card.

For storing music and pictures determine the size of your collection and multiply by three to determine the hard drive capacity you need.
 
Hi guys thanks for the replies im from the uk so im working in pounds!! the less the better lol only joking!!

Well to be honest i have no idea of how much i need to spend thats what im trying to find out really, like i say im completey new to all of this so average estimations would be helpfull to construct a pc listing all of the things i wish to do!!

I currenty have nothing so i would need to buy all the peripherals but im more interested about the prices of building the actual P.C tower.

one of the cheapest component suppliers is ebuyer.com

if your looking to spend as minimal as possible maybe better to look at an amd based unit.

you can put togethor an amd tower for £150 all brand new
 
Thanks for the reply james i wouldnt mind spending alot more than that but that has given me an idea of what to expect.

I want lots of ram and a decent size hard drive size maybe 1tb min but in order to get bigger ram and hard drive sizes does the mother board and cpu need to be bigger and better which costs more??

like i say anything i write on here might be common knowledge to most people but i need to start omewhere :)

well you can get a 1tb samsung spinpoint for £40, i would go for 4gb ddr3 memory unless your heavy gaming you wont use anymore than that, you can get a basic graphic card for £30 and up, motherboards start from about £40, cases start from as little as £10 for plain but from about £30 for a decent level
 
Thanks james great bit of advice there, im not heaving on gaming so a 4gb of Ram would probably suit me.

How do i know to buy all the correct things that are compatible with each other the last thing that i wanna do i buy all the stuff and my motherboard is not compatible with my RAM etc etc (if that can happen)

I don't know how much you want to spend. For your use, I recommend get AMD Athlon IIx 4 or intel core i3, 4GB RAM, onboard VGA.

If you get some good reliable brand hardware, you probably looking around £400 (inc OS)

well if your buying all your components knew chances it will all be up to date gear it will use

most important is the rest of your gear has to be compatible with your motherboard, so i would choose your board first, then you will be able to go to the board makers site and get a list of all compatible processors and memory

if its a new motherboard it will almost certainly need ddr3 memory
