That's the bulk of it. It comes with an 8500gt or pay 190 bucks for an 8800gt. I can get the 8800 for that price anywhere, so that will come later. Plus I'd have the 8500gt to sell or keep as a backup.

It will run me 1150.

I haven't bought a new computer in over 5 years so I'm a little out of the loop.

Is there anything coming out fairly soon that will drive the cost of current pc's or vid cards down? I'd probably be looking to buy something in the next 2 or 3 months. I'm not sure how fast these things get updated these days.

I considered going for 6 gigs of ram which would add 100 bucks to the price.

If I went for the 8800gt and the 6gigs I'd be looking at 1450.

I've never built one as I never could figure up one that could really save me all that much.

How much would a similar above PC cost to build?

Also I'm considering the whole dual vid card SLI thing. I was thinking I could just run with one card now, and when the price of the 8800gt falls to say 100 bucks, pick up another one. From what I understand this HP is not a dual vid card ready pc. Will I have to build my own to get this feature?

This computer will be for general use, but also gaming. My current computer has lasted a solid 5 and half years so I'm hoping to get the same out of this one. :)

DO NOT make the same mistake I did! I actually bought the same model the HP d5000t this christmas but I wish I would have bought my own. With this HP you will have to pay more and later on you won't be able to Overclock your system. What i would do If i was you was search google for custom computer and find some plans that tell you what parts to buy and how to assemble them. Newegg.com has great deals, If you happen to do this tell me about it and how it goes :)

I've been thinking more and more about building.

I guess I'm just worried that something will be screwed up. I'm gonna start working on the math and see what happens.

The ability to get exactly what I want is interesting.

Where is the best place to get Windows?

i think your best bet would be to build your own, windows id purchase from newegg when u purchase your other components.. newegg usually has some of the best deals around.. tiger direct sometimes does to.. and piecing together a computer isnt all that hard if u take your time.. and your always welcome to come here and ask ?'s lots of people on cf will be quick to respond with great advice and help..

Nice thanks!

The most expensive thing in that lineup is the vid cards, which is expected.

I've read here and there that the 9800 has no real noticeable leap in performance over the 8800. Is that realistic, or are current games just not pushing the 9800?

With the sli MB, can you use any 2 of the same video cards (sort of like dual channel ram), or do they have to be 'sli ready' in some way.

Also can you just buy one video card, and then add another one later, vs the mb forcing you to have two cards all the time?

You've been very helpful thanks again!
