Thinking of getting new ram...is it better to get certain brands?

I'm not overclocking and I still can't justify the $200 price tag for 2GB of ocz gold gamer ram. If I'm not overclocking should I get something like ocz? Or is there another brand that is really good for gaming w/ out the oc features?

Ya, I agree, basic value ram is the way to go in your situation. But, if you have the money, and are planing to sell it, you may have more luck if in an ad you put like "HIGH PREFORMANCE GAMING RAM." People are so dumb, they would by it just because you said that, and thats what it has. I've had an easy time selling gaming pcs to infintile gamers, just because I do a build that costs me 750 by seling it for like 1K and I undersell AW and XPS buy like 400$$ with the added fact that it has high preformance parts which the brand-names dont include (they just throw in the basic model of little stuff like that). But they think its really high end because it has "high preformance" parts, at least thats what they think. We all know that thats not 100% tru. Hey and look at me, lol, I'm only 16 and I'm making 1K+ a month just by selling Gaming pcs to people who want to have everything and if they can save a few hundred from the bignames, they'll do it. So, if it's just for you, get the Value ram, but if you are selling it, consider what I have said and get the better stuff.

You can easily go with Kingston or Corsair value ram to save money there. With 2gb of Kingston DDR400 memory installed on a new board I still waiting to see any performance lags. As a rule prices on memory stay higher then seen on other types of hardware. Where boards, cpus, video and sound cards all seem to drop down under $100 in a relatively short time memory prices will only slowly see a decrease usually when the next type comes out. The Kingstons have worked great here on the same make and board you have.

So for gaming I should just stay with the normal ram? Nothing over clocked or anything? Is there a particular brand or can anyone recommend a great pair of 1GB sticks that are good with high end games? I'm planning on buying a better video card soon.

Corsair has always seemed to be a gamer's favorite as well OCZ, Crucial, and Kingston as well all have good reps. Names like PNY and others seem to lag in that area quite a bit. While many go right after Corsair xms series dimms one recent article compared those to the Corsair 1gb value memory for overall performance. Those got a good review there. The Kingston Value Ram bought at a pc show a few months has run great on two different Asus boards so far without complaint. That would include running one particular game that will crash no matter what video card, memory, sound card, board, etc. you are running. I still have a matched pair of Corsair xms series dimms hanging around as spares due to problems seen with the old board that would also run good on the new board. But the 2gb of ram helps a lot with games like HL2 and others that require the connect to server even for single player mode.

Wow thanks so much! So as far as Corsair goes for gaming, would the xms be preferred over the value series then? I'm using Ultra right now...is this company any good? Right now I'm dual channeling 2x512mb sticks of Ultra pc3200. Can I add another brand of ram, say another 2x512mb sticks of corsair, to the pair I have right now? They are running at 3-4-4-8 latency. What can I get as far as another dual channel pair?

If you were heavy on gaming many would point right to the xms series dimms. But instead of adding two more 512mbs even by the same brand you may want to consider grabbing a pair of 1gb dimms instead. Besides a possible latency difference(2 512mb Corsair xms series dimms saw 3-3-3-8 on the old Asus board) there is one problem that can come up when running large applications even other then games on a system with multiple small dimms. The term "memory hole" comes up when the first dimm is filled too fast while running a large program and a gap is seen as data has to leap over to the next dimm. Presently the pair of 1gb Kingston Value Ram dimms have performed great on the A8N SLI board here. Just make sure to get dual sided not single sided dimms if you decide on a value ram. Single sided on this model board would be a little lame on performance.
