This is quite scary

No different than a hobby. Some people look at gaming as a hobby, like myself. Ain't nothing wrong with it.

I get that and i to consider gaming one of my hobbies... But did you read that article about the boobies....? That is just to far... And luckly for me these types of games dont really appeal to me..

I started to read the article and I can see it in some people, but doesn't really tie into me... My 'video game addiction' is/was more based on the 'joking' social aspect. My group of friends are into sports and movies and that's allllllllllllll they ever talk about or want to do and at time gets dry.

So like with playing games you can tend to goof off more. And some of you have done this... like in a FPS, just blow away you friend and run away, etc...

I don't think it's an addiction until you can't turn away from it.

If you're skipping out on your family and job to play games all the time, then you're starting to have problems.

There's nothing wrong with playing games. It's no different than people who do needlework, read, or watch tv.

Holy crap.

Glad I got out of MMO games when I did...thanks, oddly, to Dell's shoddily-designed heatsing that made my GPU overheat. I went back and added it up, and it would have taken me several years to hit max level on the game I was playing. (Hero Online)

I could not agree more. But, the whole point of it was that people reading, doing needlework, watching TV, yea the companies advertise to try and entice you, but to think that most people, without realised are effectively being brainwashed by these games. You start with the intention of it just being a hobby but because of the psychological tricks the companies are employing, without you intending it to, it becomes an obsession.

The article is true. One of my friends is addicted to WoW. I'm sure he will not admit it. But it is rediculous. He plays so much that he skips school. His brother is also addicted to video games, in general. He pirates them because it is easier than going to the store, or waiting for the game to come in the mail. How people can become so obssessed with video gaming is beyond me. Most of the time, I don't even complete a game to the end, it gets boring. Only a few games are good enough to get me "hooked" so that I finish the game.

This isn't scary at all....this is just simple human behavior and playing off that behavior. Its addictive in the sense you feel like you gained something thus enjoy it. I was one of those people with Diablo II and WoW but now I am so burned out I could simply not care about online gaming anymore :P

What is scary is the fact the government has more control over our lives and our state of health/quality of life is worse then its ever been.

yea it is simple human behaviour, but most people don't even realise that companies are playing off it.

Slightly ot, but still to do with the link, how awesome was that dolhpin video in it :D

It's all about moderation, just like everything else.

but because of what these companies do, like I said, it starts out inteneded as a bit of fun in moderation and it can so easily become so much more

You just have to look at the once "casual" gamers who end up spending hours a day on MMOs or games with unlock systems in where you get stuff for doing the same crap over and over

I use to be a wow'er and was hooked for a little bit, but after my 2nd level 80, I lost all interest. And I was talking to my friend about this and he thinks that people are addicted to wow is the ability to easily get to the highest level in a short of amount of time and have an 'accomplishment' of doing so.

But of course they know they'll expand the game, so they feel the need to 'stock up' on items/gold/gear and that's why they continue to play.

That is right on point. It is all about the accomplishment of being the best at something. I see no point in it, but to each his own I guess.

Isn't that the ultimate goal for any game? The the entertainment is there, it varies from person to person about how much time they spend on the game.

You do have a point though, unlocking systems such as the ones in Call of Duty get players hooked into it but just how do they make money out of addiction? Oh yeah, the sequels.

Plus there's 'money pit games' like Silkroad Online where they have items that advance you in level quicker, but right now Level 90 is the highest level, and with using a bot program 24/7 it takes you roughly 2 months to be 'max skilled/leveled'... So between bot program and items you could be blowing like $30/month.... And then if you get banned you lose it all :good:
