this zune!

i don't know why but this thing is hard to tell when it's actually off. the screen goes blank after a while so when you look at it and it's on it can look off. this is about the 5th or so time it has run out of batteries because it looks off but isn't. any suggestions on how to fix this?

The zune goes into 'power save' mode if you leave it alone (not playing music) for an extended period of time. In power save it keeps the current track your on, or movie, or picture you're looking at in its memory, thus using a tiny trickle of electricity.

To turn it OFF, hold the "back" button and the "down" button at the same time for about 5 seconds. It will save battery life but will take a couple seconds longer to boot :D.

see i usually just hold the play button until it turns off. that's not "off" though?

so if it has that power save, why the heck does my battery keep running out?

Thats correct. True *off* is "back" and "down" for a couple of seconds.

Cause in power save its still using a tiny amount of power to remember what track is playing and such.

Yeah, I notice a huge difference when I Power Save it verse turning it off.

I usually Power Save it during the day, and turn it off over night or when I am not going to use it for awhile.

so pressing and holding the play button is the power save? i think maybe i actually just left mine on, but you are saying it will eventually default to the power save after a while? i guess i still don't get how it shows half the battery left and then the next day it is empty unless the power save never came on and it just totally unjuiced.

How long is your Backlight timer?

Mine is on for 5 seconds, and the Brightness is Medium.

I have the First Gen. Zune, btw.

I have the first gen 30 gb too /: and its great, you have to turn it off with the back and down button held in. Lowering your backlight timer and brightness will help, my is set to dim and 1 second. It helps me a ton as I listen to music every day; and while im sleeping its hooked up to a set of desktop speakers. The power save mode basically kicks in right when the backlight turns off, you could say. because that big beautiful screen takes a lot of power. Holding "play" for powersave mode should rarely be used. It doesn't really help much.

so i found the 80gb zune shuts off even when the battery is only on the halfway point. like the battery lasts for a long time, but the meter is not accurate at all. that makes it very difficult to know how much time you actually have left on it. anyone know anything about this?

Thanks for that tip - I didn't realize their was"power save" mode and then, "true off". This makes alot of sense....
