I have a debian iso (debian-31r2-i386-binary-1) and installed in VMWARE.
Apparently in setup it asked me to install desktop environment (which i did)
but i have a problem. My login is like command prompt (fully black with white text)..is this version of debian command based ?
i when i do logn in im still like command prompt with commands and all.is this really like that ?

you could be booting into like a run level 3 or something to that effect. It is too hard to say with out seeing your machine. Did you install gnome or KDE as your desktop enviroment?

It didn't ask me for any desktop selection.it just asked me to install "desktop environment" but not gnome or kde !

I am not too familiar with debian because I don't use it that much. I do think that perhaps their installer dvd is also their live dvd.....

So, when you boot off your HD it boots you to a command line?

try typing in run level 5 or linux 5 at the command line. What boot loader are you using?

yes it boots straight to command line.im using grub as boot loader

I had the exact same problem with debian if that run level 5 doesnt work try this

type "apt-get update"
then type "apt-get install x-window-system kde kdm"

it will download round 250 megs then after thatit will go through all theese settings

then I think you have to type "startx" when debian boots up

cant afford the luxury to download that much cause my intenet connection is that bad.

Try downloading a plain, sarge ISO CD... Etch & Sid come with internet downloading which is practically a pain in the youknowwhat. According to my Sarge installs, if you select Desktop Environment you *should* boot in a graphical environment after selecting the kernel in the GRUB menu, if it doesn't, then I *guess* there might be some problem with VMWare and the X driver (though it shouldn't!) or it's in runlevel 3 and not 5... then I guess you'll have to download what Shenry said...

In personal opinion though off topic, that's the big downside of Linux: Gotta download hundred of megs just for having the basic stuff Windows has :(
