Three questions in one

Given my RAM situation, what is the best browser for me to use?

I do not have a phone capable of running kik. Is there a kik emulator that would be compatible with my system?

Someone suggested I run ipconfig/flushdns (in command prompt) as part of routine system maintenance. Does this help me in any way that CCleaner and Defragmenter would not?

Once you get a new system then Google Chrome (and all of the other modern browsers) will run absolutely fine.

ipconfig and flushdns do not anything like CCleaner does - you don't use those commands to clean old files off your hard drive.

And yeah no modern browser will work well on 512MB RAM. In due time these browsers are going to stop supporting XP anyway.

So CCleaner does everything flushdns does and more?

No... CCleaner is a program made by Piriform that removes files from your hard drive to save space. Typically it removes things like temporary files and browser cahce.

ipconfig /flushdns is a command that you type into the Windows Command Prompt. You can read about what it does here: http://superuser.com/questions/235749/what-does-dns-flushing-do

I am by no means a networking expert but I'm pretty sure it does not do anything like what CCleaner does. They are completely different.

Yes they do totally different things. Flush dns is only used when having Internet connection issues.

I'm not sure where who told you to use flush dns command but it won't do any good in your situation. We wouldn't lead you astray.

As stated, flushing DNS is pretty useless as a maintenance 'tool'. If anything it would make your DNS lookups take longer since you have to re-acquire the name->IP association from the internet again.

Is there any benefit to routinely clearing your DNS cache? I read about what it does.
Benefit? No. Flushing your DNS cache decreases performance since all the DNS look ups that you did before now have to be looked up again when you go to that site, instead of using the cached entry.

I hate to say it, but I think using Internet Explorer is probably your best bet as it's several versions old. Current browsers tend to use more and more resources as they improve.
