thumb drive causes blank screen

I have a Sony 256 mb USB 2.0 thumb drive for use with my desktop PC. Sometimes (not every time), when I insert my thumb drive into a USB port, my screen goes blank. The only thing I can do is then pull out the thumb drive, turn off the power to the PC and power it back up. Whe I reinsert the thumb drive after doing this, it works fine. What is causing this and how can i stop it? Thanks.

although pen-drives dont specifically use a driver of their own, they do interact with the general USB driver, so try unsinstalling any USB support froom the laptop and reinstalling it all again, use Device Manager to do this. Make sure you have the drivers before you start this process though.

It does not do that when I plug another USB device in the same port (I have a LaCie external hard drive as well, works fine). I don't think it is the thumb drive itself, because it does not do this on my home computer, only at work. Is my CPU trying to reboot or something when this happens?
