What is thunderbolt?

Is it an I/O port or a high speed data transfer port? Theoretically, the port can do up to 10 gb/s transfer put from what I've seen from Intel it is only advertised as an I/O port.

It's a multipurpose I/O port capable of simultaneous data transfer and display output.

It says it is compatible with display port so could I get a thunderbolt capable to acheive those speeds on my spring 2010 macbook pro?
