Hey there guys im fairlly new to computers but i have got a little bit of knowledge now as im just starting a degree doing I.T support. Amongst my time at uni we have stumbled on a modual called Pc hardware taking a good look into the components that are used to construct computers.

Anyhow to cut a long story short i have been given an old tower pc to open up and mess about with.

The manufacturer is TIME and to be honest the support is absolutely dyer from what i can see!!

Anyhow i have taken all the pictures and stuff off the hard drive and the first thing i wanted to do is to completely wipe everything and factory restore it as its full of virese and running ridiculously slow so i figured in order to work with this pc i might as start from a clean slate.

But there is one problem i don't have the recovery disc and i have tried all the F commands to try and get into the partition to complete this factory restore but i have had no luck whats so ever.

Does anyone know how to restore this computer without the disc??

On the other hand im tempted just to load a new O\S onto it but i have seen how hard it is too get any information about time computers and dont want to be left with all my drivers having been deleted and cant get hold of any!!

Be great if some1 could point me in the correct direction or help us a little , im very keen to learn new things with computers so im all ears

I'm assuming it was running XP? Sometimes you need a recovery cd along with the recovery partition. Are you sure there is a recovery partition on the drive? As far as buying new installation media to reinstall windows, i don't think you can get XP anymore, maybe a few places have it.

If you can find a copy online, make sure the user or company is legit.

Yeah its running Xp service pack 2 home edition, i was under the impression that all computers have a factore restore on the hard drive, that cant be deleted so in the event of any problems with viruses etc you can always go back to the start.

Im abit reluctant to put a new OS on with the drivers etc TIME dont make things easy by the looks of things!!

We can always try and clean off the infections if you want. Just let me know if you want to try that route.
 
yeah we could do but thats something im not really up to scratch on yet but i suppose it would be good to know for future reference.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here or here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. Please keep updating until it says you have the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • A log will be saved automatically which you can access by clicking on the Logs tab within Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

If for some reason Malwarebytes will not install or run please download and run Rkill.scr, Rkill.exe, or Rkill.com but DO NOT reboot the system and then try installing or running Malwarebytes. If Rkill (which is a black box) appears and then disappears right away or you get a message saying rkill is infected, keep trying to run rkill until it over powers the infection and temporarily kills it. Once a log appears on the screen, you can try running malwarebytes or downloading other programs.



Download the HijackThis installer from here.
Run the installer and choose Install, indicating that you accept the licence agreement. The installer will place a shortcut on your desktop and launch HijackThis.

Click Do a system scan and save a logfile

Most of what HijackThis lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

Post the logfile that HijackThis produces along with the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log
 
Hi John I run malware on the computer I had given me ..... Wait for it

Malware infections 2967

I also installed avast anti virus and that found a total of 26 viruses

I also installed and run advance system cleaner which found
81 system optimisation problems
8702 security defence problems
173 disk fragment problems

No can you see y I wanted a clean start ha ha

It's still running very slow but I'm in the process of deleting alk the unwanted programs/data/ printers etc to hopefully free up some space and then I will run some disk fragments to see if that helps!

Any more suggestions John

Did you click on remove selected button on malwarebytes so it could remove those infections?

Please do the following. I still see adware in your log.

Download and Run ComboFix
If you already have Combofix, please delete this copy and download it again as it's being updated regularly.
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.


In your next reply please post:
  • The ComboFix log
  • A fresh HiJackThis log
  • An update on how your computer is running

If you truly had that many infections, (I have not seen a log to show otherwise) then its a good idea to run combofix as its a much deeper scanner. Like I said in my previous post, I still see adware in your log. Combofix gives me a much better idea of whats going on in your system.

If you already have a copy of combofix to whereever you are downloading it to, delete the old file first. Are you using internet explorer to download the file? if so when you download it and is asks you where to save it, change the name to kittyfix and then click on save. Save the file to your desktop. Then double click on kittyfix and it should work.
 
dideverything you said to do and now its been stuck on a blue dos screen for about 2 hours!! it says scanning files shouldnt take any longer than 10mins but badly infected computers may double !!!

Has combofix completed yet? Sorry had to leave for work. I'll check in when I get home.
 
hi john i could not get combifix to work it would set everthing up, bring up a blue dos screen and it would say that it was going to take 10mins but computers that are seriously infected the time to take to scan them may double ...... it would be stuck on that screen for hours and still nothing!!!

i later downloaded and installed SUPERantispyware and run that it found over 300 problems!!!

i think the computer is riddled to be honest im strugglig to make it run ay better

Open superantispyware, click on the preferences button, click on the statistics/logs tab and then open the log you just did and copy and paste that log back here so I can look at it.
