Time for an upgrade?

My gf is complaining about the jerkiness of Sims 2 on my computer. She's just installed the new Seasons pack. Its only become jerky after installing it. My theory is that to stop the jerkiness is gonna cost a pretty penny.
My current specs:
Athlon XP 2600 (~1900MHz)
1.5GB ram (not sure of brand)
Ati Radeon 9600XT 256mb video card
160gb hard drive
ASUS A7N8X-X m/board

This seems to be a pretty good balanced system. Not FAST, but not too shabby.
Your thoughts?

Have you turned the settings down, or is that not acceptable? The Sim shouldn't be all that graphics heavy, and you have a decent rig.

Seems like his gfx card (along with the rest of the computer) is decent (especially compared to mine)
The processor may be a little low but that shouldnt hold you back too much (mine works for low end gaming)

I wouldnt think that that comp would cause the jerkiness. Its more likely a setting or things running in the back ground.

Try googling "windows xp optimization" and look for a guide of things to disable using run>msconfig... that should get rid of unnecessary background problems.

thank u all for replying, I'm about to try ur suggestions. I found a review on the new sims 2 exp. pk. and it was tested on a high end machine but still had some jerkiness. I'm not about to spend money replacing my vid card, my cpu, AND add more RAM just to MAYBE take away some jerkiness from the Sims 2. I think the game has become a system hog due to the detail of the weather esp the snow. I don't get the appeal of the game but I'm nice so I'm doing what I can to make the game run better for her.
