long story short I bought a POS computer and have since replace all the hardware except the processor, the motherboard (ASUS Maximus Hero VI) is being shipped and I need to buy a processor that can handle the tasks and not make my purchase of this motherboard a waste. what is suggested if mostly being used to play video games (starcraft, Civilizaton, SimCity, ect.) EXTRA INFO: the pc has a Graphics card, (my first input)

Question two, I currently have 450 watts, is that going to be enough to power my new motherboard, graphics card, +. or am I going to have to upgrade that as well... aka how much energy are we talking to run this thing?

Responses are very helpful.
thanks

Answering a question, with more questions.

What brand is the power supply?

Whats your budget on processor?

What is the Graphics card you have?

Drowning in discuss, over this project

the battery is: Thermaltake TR2 430 WATT

the Graphics card is: GeForce 640 2gb

Seeing as how I have spent $700 this far, spending the extra change to make it better isn't really going to keep me from diving way out in front of my budget. the plan is to spend around $200

You overspent on the board, and now you don't have enough to spend on the CPU. The i5 4670K is the mininum CPU I will reccomend, and it goes out of you budget. You will also need a new PSU, a CX600M will cut it. The 640 is pretty low end, but you can upgrade later, it should play most games on low or medium.

Why? As long as the OP doesn't want to overclock, then the i5-4570 will be basically just as fast, which is really more than he could possibly utilize with a Geforce GT 640 anyway.

...however, to the OP: As I've recently learned from Johnb35, you should definitely get a new PSU, because your current one is of pretty low quality.

I would agree with getting a new psu, thermaltake is not a bad psu but your current one is only 450w, considering your building a pretty good brand new system, you want a strong psu to run it.

You do not need to spend a fortune you can get some good power supplies for $50-60

I will most likely, as stated upgrade my graphics at a later date, but lets focus on the motherboard, being the purchase of design on the rest of the pc... if I wanted to play video games on Med-High and need processor that isn't going to be upgraded later on, currently I am swinging towards the i5 4670K. happy to make that move just want to be sure that I don't end up spending not enough money.

The 4670k is the 2nd best haswell cpu in raw performance, but is probably the best overall in terms of price and performance, It is only a hair behind the 4770k in performance and is quite a bit cheaper.

I don`t think you would need to upgrade the 4670k later on, game performance will be more determined by the gpu you get later on.

If you do not want to be spending money upgrading this system later on make sure you get a motherboard with, sata III, usb 3.0, pci-e 3.0, it is not a must but i would recommend getting a board with a uefi bios.

Final Question

Very helpful guys.

is 600 watts going to be enough for:

160gb hard drive
ASus Maximus Hero VI
GeForce 640 2gb
i5 4670k
and any other components that might be added? cause the difference between 600w and 750w is double in price...

Thanks again guys going to be talking about this forum.

600 watts should be fine, just note that the new 770/780 Nvidia cards require at least 600 watt or greater power supply.

Personally would recommend getting the best power supply to fit your current and near future needs. My Antec is pushing three years old and still works fine. JohnB35 did post a link to a nicely priced CX600.

As for the motherboard, I don't think you over paid, perhaps considering your budget, but sometimes these things work out for the best. It is a nice board by the way :)
