Tip of the day

I just found out something really cool and it has speeded up my shut down times imensely. What it does is wait for less time for services to end upon shutdwn. I dont know about you guys but my PC used to sit there for ages and then finally shut down.

Open up regedit and browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, then go to SYSTEM, then CURRENT CONTROL SET, then CONTROL. In the right hand pane there is an entry called WaitToKillService. Simply double click on this entry and change the value to 200.

Reboot and see how quickly it shuts down. BRILLIANT

O ok ...
I'll see how fast it is shutting down once i've changed it lol
I've had the computer running the whole day

Really, i saw a speed increase. Or maybe it was my imagination wanting me to see an icrease, ah well. It burned a couple of minutes of boredom didnt it....??

i have one but it takes 2 minutes.
Two minutes?! Both my laptop and old Athlon are easilly less than a minute, and main system's less than 30 seconds.

Well, back to the topic, I noitced a pretty big difference in my laptop. It wasn't too bad to begin with, but now it's almost instant :)

not actually in rush to shut down. Booting could use a boast though :D

I prefer to give all my services and apps time to close themselves before they get killed>

i dont turn off my PC lol...

even on my stock 2600+ it takes only maybe 10-15secs to shutdown, and easily less than a minute to boot, maybe 40secs if that? i will have to time it or something.

It seems the faster a CPU is the longer it takes to boot XP. The lappy I'm on now boots in under 20 seconds (Moble P3 1200MHz, 256MB) and my 3GHz machine takes about 40

Woo hoo, at last someone who actually noticed a difference, cheers "The other one"

Maybe I'm missing something, but why would I care how long it takes to shut down? I hit the button to turn off, then go and do whatever it is I gotta do, it could take 5 minutes and I wouldn't care.

Actually, I like my laptop to shut down rather quickly. Well of course battery issues(which I've never had it below about 40% but still...) Or sometimes I use it rather late in bed and like to make sure it shuts off before I roll over to fall asleep. I usally just set it in my chair and the fan doesn't get enough air, so yeah, I like to make sure it shuts off quickly so I don't have to sit there and hold it :P

And for the record, my laptop took about 36 seconds to boot. That's from pressing the power button to getting a signal on wifi. Chop about 5 seconds for using wired networking.

it helps if you're looking at something naughty and your wife come rushing it that you wanna shut the thing down in 2ms.
