To go wireless or lan?

I will soon have two desk top computers, one on the first floor and one in the basement. I have one high-speed cable going through a cable modem connected by Ethernet cable to the main computer on the 1st floor. Both computers will be used for on-line gaming by the kids.

For the transfer rate required for gaming would it be best to connect to the second computer in the basement with a lan?

Can wireless handle the game speeds? If so what type of antenna would be needed to get the signal up to the first floor router? If the primary computer is connected directly to the router by an Ethernet cable would it suffer any speed loss?

Thanks

No question, go wired if at all possible. Online gaming, you should be just fine either way, but local gaming you probably will see a difference. Plus with wireless, there's a much higher chance that your rates will degrade.

i have a dude downstairs that plays online all the time wireless

yes you might have a decrease in signal strength but his speed is still higher than the internet connection so it doesnt really matter and that way you dont have to run wires down to the basement, but it does also matter what your flooring is tile wont let you get as good a signal as say carpet.

If they're going to play FPS (First Person Shooters) go with lan if they're just regular non demanding MMO go for wireless

I would always go for wired LAN, unless not possible. Gaming will work fine on wireless, though. But wireless sucks, so only use it if you have to.

Thanks for the input. Running a hard wire down stairs may be as easy as setting up a wireless connection.
