To powerbook or not to powerbook

Alright, my apologies if there has been any posts related to this exact subject but here it goes: I'm going into college and have like 1800 to spend on a laptop. I currently have a PC, amd 3200+, 1gb, 230gb hdrive, blah blah blah, and wanna know if anyone would recommend a Powerbook. I was thinking maybe the 12 inch because it's not my only computer, portable, powerful and yet at the same time arousing to the eye (I should be in apple marketing.) Would anyone suggest this, I was just going to get a 60gb hdrive becasue id never need anymore and upgrade the ram to 768mb (to upgrade it any further is a rip off if you look) and the apple care plan incase i spill coolaid on it or something. Before you say I can't get all this for that price, my college get's a 200 dollar discount for all apples. So basically should I go with this or look elsewhere? I've also heard the iBook is good and I also get discounts from Dell and Gateway. Open to any suggestions.
 
So, you already have a deskptop right, what do you need the notebook/powerbook for? If its just for taking notes, to bring to class, you might go with something cheap. Need to know more about what you need it for though.
 
agreed u have a good comp, are you taking it to university? bc some ppl only take a laptop bc of the small deskspace in dorm rooms.. is that what your doing or are u taking your comp and using the laptop for notes like lynx said?
 
yah i noticed taking a laptop to class is useless. i am a computer engineering major at university of michigan and i took my laptop to class like twice ever and realized taking notes by hand was faster.

what are you doing with this computer? without going into the PC vs apple issue, if you like to game i suggest going with an intel or amd laptop. if you want extreme portability and video/photo editing powerbook i guess (you can tell im not an apple enthusiast).
 
well if you want to do gaming i suggest the pc since a pc can basically do anything a mac can. however if you can sacrifice the gaming aspect then i guess a mac would do as well.

and the spyware issue always comes up. just don't download porn or use limewire and it should fine.
