To RAID or not to RAID...

As part of my new rig I am going to setup a RAID 0 for sure with 2 74gb Raptors for gaming.

The question I have is this:

Should I use 4 36gb Raptors in RAID 0+1 for the OS or should I just use 4 7200RPM SATA's?

You shouldn't need more than 2 harddrives running at RAID-0 for your OS. But, for gaming.. you can set a partition to about or around 10gigs for your OS(with 2 drives) and use the other space as a RAID-0 with your games. The space over on the drives you can set as another RAID-0 for music, programs and so forth.

To anwser your question: You will be fine with 2 drives at RAID-0 but for faster performance get the 4 and use a OS raid then gaming RAID-0. If you want music and program space without ruining your gaming performance.(ex. Programs running while gaming) I would do the OS, Software RAID combo so you have space left over to put any files u want on it.

you should put your os and all your programs on multiple disks in raid, but put all your backed up files and such on a single hard drive, maybe a 300gb... such as music and videos.
RAID 0 is not reliable and there is no fault tolerance. if something goes wrong then all of your data is gone. (in which case an os or another program can be re-acquired, whereas a song or a home-video may not be)

I don't think you guys realize what he's saying, he said raid0+1 which means two drives stripe data like raid0 and the other two backup those striped drives like raid1, but to answer the question, it's going to be pretty nuts regardless, I'd just go for the 7200's myself, but if you're looking to brag and have money laying around, the raptors would be pretty sick, just dunno if it would be worth it

Correct Steve. I think what I may do is run 4 7200's in RAID0+1 because I want the benifit fo performance and the backup for the OS and skip the RAID 0 for gaming and just use one 74GB Raptor. From what I gather from reading about RAID 0 for gaming is there is not a HUGE advantage weighed against the expense. I'm still thinking so I may change my mind again.
