Too much defragmentation?

Is it true that defragmentation should not be done too often?
I'm not sure what "too often" means tho but some guy says he lost lots of datas because of it.

Unless he had an power loss when defragging absolutely NO.

I defrag and disk cleanup every time I exit IE & Firefox. My computers usually get reformatted 5 times an month, I usually defrag until my HDD gets into the 40-50C area.

Alright, I thought so. Always try to keep the degree of defra below 1%.

What is that? Temperature? Didn't know it has an inpact on it.

At idle only the motor is spinning, it doesnt create as much heat as it does when reading and writing all the time.

I have PC Wizard 2007 to track my HDD temperatures.

I personally would not suggest such extreme methods as "Oscaryu1" due to the fact that it will reduce the life of the hard drive significantly.

If it's ghosted it's not as bad but manually reinstalling an OS, even an unattended install is a pain especially if it's several times a month.

Defragmenting very often won't cause any damage to windows, but it will wear down the hard drive life, but not by much (IE months or years)

True, but unless you system is covered in dust and your running SLi'd video cards + Quad in an tiny case, the HD is fine.

Basicly i had a hard drive die on me, it was 13GB and it was in a slow system, the hard drive was constantly reading and writing. not even my celeron 500mhz system can use a hard drive that much when using windows alone, it didn't have much ram in the older system so it was constanting wanting more information from the hard drive.

From my personal experience, run it if the fragmentation levels are high, your analysis would advice you on whether you need to or not. If you run it regularly esp when there is enough free space, it wont take long, else if you do it like once a year ( as i did ) it will take hours. what i have understood is that it doesnt do any harm (except if the power goes off while its running) since the same amount of wear and tear would be inflicted on a highly fragmented drive if you were to read and write files off it.
