Too Much RAM?

1GB isnt enough for certaing gaming configurations (try running Doom3/UT2004 at high settings using just physical memory to get away with this you need 1.5-2GB). As for heavy graphics, the more the better .... when you get super-serious stuff they have renderfarms

I played UT2004 at the highest setting except for a few with only have 512mb ram .

Maybe now, but in the future you will need 2-4gb of ram.

In the future your whole computer going to need updating so it really does not matter what happens in the future,

I knew there was a reason I got 2gb of ram when every told me I did not need it

Play assault 1600x1200, 32 players on just and only 512MB of physical memory (say, the Skarrj level)
