too much video RAM

Is there a way to limit how much video RAM a video card will use?

Stronghold seems to play differently depending on how much video RAM is available. I want to use the newer card with more RAM, but I don't like how Stronghold runs with more RAM.

Any card (or way) out there that can limit or reduce available RAM??

The video card will usually use what is available on the card, unless it is built into the motherboard. In that case, just change the RAM settings in the BIOS menu when you boot up.

Another question..., you're having problems with more RAM available? That doesn't seem right, is there some other condition that has changed when you noticed the problem?

The new card has more RAM. Now Stronghold turned on features that weren't there with less RAM. To me that's like a different game. :(

Ah, gotcha, again though I don't think there's a way to limit the RAM on a card, just doesn't really ever come up as a needed option that much. Just out of curiosity, you can't just turn these options off? (I'm not familiar with Stronghold...)

Sure. Redo all the extures so that they are all <less than half the amount of advertised memory your card has. ;)

Sounds like the newer card is crappeir than the old card. For the record, if you take a bad chip and give it a lot of ram it wont work well as compared to say a good chip with less ram. Standard marketing practises really. For the record, what videocards are you comparing

Furthermore, sinc es tronghold isnt that old new a game itthe amount of memory isnt an issue so long as you're packing 64+

Well, another of my games Rome: Total War uses photographic 36-bit colorspace to display less-than-photographic 65K colors. This is the only reason I had to get a larger 128 MB video card (PNY).

Stronghold runs fine on 16 MB of video RAM, but rather than running poorly the game automatically disables some features, which I think is clever. The trees and grass don't move using 16 MB, which I like more. With 128 MB, the trees and grass move sadistically fast. I can slow down the gameplay, but then the soldiers move too slowly.

I was hoping to not have to use 2 video cards on one PC, but it looks like I'll have to.

Are you ure there is no option to change the grphics yourself in a menu?

you can never have too much video ram.
it is benificial. the video ram only adds to the ablility for the videocard to hold those precious textures

and if youre using a radeon and a geforce you'd have to have two different drivers installed... which could cause major problems.
if i were you i'd email the game makers, im sure theres a way to stop the grass + such from moving if they set the game to automatically stop them from moving with a crappier card.
btw, the ram isn't the problem. its because the video card is simply higher quality, and therefore the game could run faster.
for instance, i used to have a 9800pro 128mb and it ran much smoother than my friends 9600xt with 256mb.
i mean really... if you get a 7300 series card with 512mb (which they produce because games normally say have at least 64mb of video ram and so on, people think the cards will last a lot longer) it still won't run nearly as well as a 7600gt with 256mb of ram.
video card quality != amount of ram integrated on the video card.

yea thats the ram that the AGP card is allowed to use, not how much it does use... and i don't think you can set it below a certain amount depending on the bios.

The old video card is Diamond's Viper 550, pretty hot stuff in its time.
It only has 16 MB of ram, but it is AGP 2x.
The only strategy game it couldn't play is Rome: Total War, which
uses a lot of 32-bit graphics. It lasted this whole time of daily gaming.
I don't even think it has a fan, so just passive cooling.

some of the older games change your settings, and one of the fafctors is RAM.
