Too Slow Time To Go

hello
my pc freezes too ofter and i have to reload xp and all that nightmare that goes with that but mostly it's too slow.
time to get a new one. probably just a tower for now.
i don't really know what specifications to look for (speed is my main concern i never use a lot of disk space anyway.
this is what i found in control panel under system.
XP Home version 2002 service pack 2
AMD Duron Processor
902MHz , 304 MB of ram
would even the cheapest pc be very superior to this since mine is about 7 years old if not what should i look for?
thank you for your help
rob

i would look for something with at least 512mb of RAM and at least a 2ghz pentium4 or at least an AMD 3000+
ill be happy to take the old one off your hands though

not sure what your budget is, but this is the tower and you can through in another 512mb of RAM is you want for a gig and a nice video card.

i like that build its similar to min but in reality it's what i wish i had because right now i'm limited by my socket 754 which is out dated, as well as my agp video card, so i'm stuck in order to upgrade i'll need to buy a new board, which means new processor and while i'm at it i should probably move to pci - E and then while i'm spending all this money i'll probably make sure it has ddr 2 memory lol, which is probably the reason i havn't done any of that yet

yeah, its a pretty solid balanced build, and it has a PCI-E 16 slot for like up to a 7900 or maybe a 7950 in there too, but that might be pushing it

yea that'd be a nice build to get, i think you can get a dual core processor for socket 939 too but i'm not sure

well in that case that build is even betterr because you could put a dual core processor on it later if you want

Stop recommending that crappy PSU! You won't be powering a 7900 series card off it. For a system like that, go with the XClio 450BL or Hipro 400W, depending on the choice of video card.

What about changing the case and power supply to something like this:

Even though it is a bit more, it has a high quality power supply and case.

Pricey, but certainly better. Actually, this would do the trick as well: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16811190080

The included PSU is a good quality Topower. More than adequate for a lowend to midrange video card. It'll end up being cheaper still.

reading this stuff is fascinating but way over my head. are you guys talking about ordering all this and it arrives as a complete pc and is windows os included or are you talking about actually getting the parts and assembling them?

i will neaver get to this level of expertice in time so in my case is it just the processor and the ram then? since my pc always has about 85% free space i thought memory was not an issue but i'm probably missing something. when i go to defragmenter it says 37.26 GB free space 31.59 GB free space 84%. this is probably not the ram then. can someone explain . although i have been somewhat pc literate for some years this basic stuff i really don't get,

its really not that hard, especially for this build because you dont need anything fancy, its kinda just plug and play with a good guide

upgradeing the CPU and the RAM wont work, because you wont find a better CPU to fit in that socket, you might as well just build

you can even buy the parts and visit your local CompUSA to put it together for you, and its only like 30 bucks for that, that is your best option

i have it figured out now. i don't really have to think about the hard drive they are all way bigger than the one i'm using. ram and a good cpu.
appreciate the help
