toolbar icons dont show

hey guys for some reason the icons dont show up on my toolbar.

for example if i open up the my documents folder usually a small icon wood appear on my toolbar, but this doesnt happen. i have checked all the settings i no to try and fix this. can anyone help. thanks
 
I am guessing you mean the bar with your clock and other little icons , and there is an arrow that you click and more pop out.

You have windows xp sp1? Exact same thing happenes for me, Although I have gotten used to it and didnt ever find a way to fix it. Most likely getting sp2 would fix it.
