Hi, sometimes my start/system tray bar changes from the old win98 look, which I prefer, to the new Xp look by itself when I boot up my computer. What would cause this and how do I stop it from doing it? I appreciate any positive responses.

thx

One way to see that problem cleared up fast or at least until the next boot is saving a custom theme while in the display's appearance section. If it loads in the XP default theme you simply refresh with the custom theme you saved.

What is likely happening is that since you haven't saved a theme Windows is automatically bouncing back to the defaults. Once you save a theme and see it applied then Windows has to remember that when loading the desktop.

How do I go about saving a theme? I've never heard about doing that before. The problems seems to happen every couple of months.

When you right click anywhere on the desktop you will see a small properties screen appear depending on the version of Windows you are running. From the Vista window here the top item for Window color and appearance is where to start.

Once you have decided on a background if any or using a solid color the option for Classic Windows is also seen in the popup that appears when clicking the link for this. Even the things like borders around explorer windows as well as the color of the Start taskbar can be set there.

Right above the last item being the display settings for screen resolutions and refresh rates plus the advanced settings the "Theme" link is then chosen to see....

The little hand on the screen shows the button to press in order to bring the prompt where you enter the name of the theme according to the current settings and click save once the name is entered. Also you have to remember to click the "apply" button whenever you make any changes to see Windows remember them.
