Toooo much harddrive?

Do you think that's too much?

Is it possible to have too big of a harddrive that it actually decreased performance?

I dont think a large hd's would be made if performance would decrease when used. I'm sure some performance would be lost if the drive was pretty close to being filled.

500gb would surely take care of the "Close to being filled" problem! For me anyway

It'll be fine, so long as the RPM speed and cache are modern, and taken that it's SATA 3.0, I know that they are fine. Performance would only decrease, as "Sacrinyellow5" said, if you fill it with stuff.

larger HDDs work faster than smaller ones of the same type and RPM because of the higher density on the platters means that the read heads dont have to move as far to pick up or write data. If you BMed two WD SATAII 7200RPMs, the larger one would be faster.

but you have a backup and increased performance

That is what I would have done.
My mistake, when i glanced over your post I thought you said RAID 0, not RAID 1+0.

He already has RAID 0, and seemed to be implying that he really didn't need that much hard drive space anyway...
