looks like that's a C2D T8x00, correct? I know those tend to run rather warm in most any laptop. That plus age (dust and too much crap on the HD) means a very warm lap. The system could probably use a good (physical) cleaning, some new thermal paste, and a clean install of Windows. While this wouldn't completely solve the heat issue, it'd probably help a great deal.
As for cooling pads, I wouldn't bother. Few of them really help that much. If anything, get one of those things you put on your lap and set the laptop on (fanless ones) It doesn't help the laptop cool anymore, but helps keep your lap from getting roasted.
