Toshiba Troubles

Hi - thanks in advance for reading. Need some advice.

Toshiba A65-S126 notebook getting multiple BSOD. Once they start, they come like a pestilence. Also, the video starts getting dicey when this happens - snowy screens, lines, freezes. First thing I did was chkdsk - no problems that I could see. Then, I reinstalled factory software (which also reformatted the hard drive). THIS MAKES THE MACHINE USABLE FOR ABOUT A DAY. Then, it goes back to BSOD. I've done this 3 times...same results. Next, I cleaned out the heat sink (which actually wasn't all that dirty). Reinstalled factory software for fourth time. Same act - OK for an evening, then BSOD city. This morning, I ran memtest86+ and it found copious errors (thousands). I removed upgrade RAM which left only the motherboard mounted RAM. Reran memtest86+ with similar results.

Soooo.....my question is this. Should I just assume the memory on the motherboard (or something else on the board) is messed up and proceed? Or should I break the seal on a replacement hard drive I purchased just in case? Or, do you very smart computer folks have something else I should try?

I'd rather not mess with the motherboard/buy a new computer, but......my wife is addicted to wifi web surfing and when mama aint happy, aint nobody happy. So, your help is my salvation!

Thanks,

Jeff

sounds like you're having system board problems, which those are a dream to replace in a laptop. i'd suggest just getting a new one, you can buy a brand new dell for 499 or so with internal wifi and li ion battery or you could try to find one cheaper on ebay. http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&oc=iB130S1&s=dhs

i'd suggest gettin the 6 cell battery because mine only lasted about 1 hour and 40 minutes with the stock 29 wt hour 4 cell battery

i'm not familiar with these notebooks because i only work with acer's. Sometimes there is a stick of RAM on either side of the main board; one is easily visable on the under side; underneath a hatch. The other is normally mounted underneath the keyboard. If you have 2 sticks on the bottom thats all you'll have.
Now the ram underneath the keyboard is easily accessable and seeing as you've cleaned out the thermal module (you dont mention how you did this) you shouldn't find it too much trouble to gain access to the underside of the keyboard.

Exactly right. I have this machine. There are 4 small screws that will release the keyboard, disconnect the ribbon and the flap gate lifts right up. There are 2 memory slots on this machine..

Thanks guys

I understand there is another memory module. I did disassemble the machine to clean the heat sink - which was not hard, but a bit scary - so I'm sure I could do it again. But I was under the impression that the other RAM module was soldered to the board. Is this not so? Can I replace it?

If so, then I might be in business.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Its a myth that the RAM on older notebooks is attatched to the mainboard; i know people that said it and that was because they could see where the other stick was

Well, I've disassembled the laptop again and I'll be damned if I can find the other stick of RAM. If its not integrated, its hidden pretty well. Any ideas where to look?

Well, after disassembling the notebook (AH-GAIN), probing around, then contacting Toshiba, I have discovered that the RAM on the Satellite A65-S126 is in fact resident on the motherboard. Damned if I can find it, but the tech at Toshiba assured me that it was integral to the board. And a new motherboard - not that I would attempt this on a laptop - is near the price of a new replacement crap-lap-top. $500 for two years of life is OK, I guess.

Thanks for the help. But, unless I'm missing something, I'm hosed. Time to sell it for parts and buy a new one.

The bright side is that I've learned or relearned a few things. 1. I have the ability to disassemble/reassemble/disassemble/reassemble/disassemble a laptop without losing parts or spilling a beverage inside it. 2. When someone says something is "never" (or "always") done, they usually are incorrect. 3. Cheap = throwaway when it comes to most things, including laptops.

Are you sure you have an A65-S126? Because i've taken it apart more than I'd like to have had to, and the keyboard is only held on with two screws, and there is no memory module evident under the keyboard. You may have a different model, i'm guessing...
