Total Motherboard Noob.

Hey all, David here.

So, I'm completely new to differentiating the types of motherboards, what are the good brands, what kind of setup these things require...

Yep. So I have a good $600+ budget, and I was wondering what are the differences between motherboards..? And, although this is completely unrelated to motherboards... is it alright to use a Compaq Presario SR1230NX case instead of buying a new one? (Like... pros and cons?)

Thanks!
Assuming you answer. If not. Then grrrr.

Just kidding. :)

Most likely you will need to order a new case as well, due to the fact that OEM machines use proprietary connections to the motherboard. You would never get them to match up to the new motherboard without some major modification of some sort.

As far as what brand to go with, stay with Asus, Gigabyte, and MSI. The differences would be what chipset they have, what cpu's they support, what memory they support.

How much higher can you go for the budget? If you need everything then you might have to stay with an AMD build compared to an Intel build since AMD costs less.

uhmm. I think my max budget is around $1200, but I'm just trying to learn what kinda motherboards are in the market, and why they are presented so confusingly.

you just match your cpu, ram, to your motherboard,to make sure its all going to work, plus you look for any specific things in the motherboard that you want, say one has more usb ports etc, something along those lines, sticking with name brands like mentioned by johnb35oh plus you match the case you want to the motherboard also. Say you buy an atx case buy an atx motherboard.

hope i helped
