touchpad mysteriously disappears

My touchpad was working fine. I recently got a optical usb mouse (generic, listed as HID-complient in device manager) for my laptop. Initially, they would both work simultaneously.

Then the touchpad disappeared. It's not listing in the device manager. Add hardware doesn't work. In the mouse applet, no hardware is detected.

I installed the manufacturer's driver (Elantech Inc.), no change. I can find no relevant settings in the bios. Everything is up2date, no viruses detected. There's no button on the pad to en/disable it.

When I boot off a Linux live CD though, the touchpad does work. So it's a soft (xp) issue.

Any suggestions?

Have you tried using it with the usb mouse unplugged? When I plug a mouse into mine the touchpad gets disabled.

No, that doesn't do anything. Nor does rebooting with the usb mouse out.

I'm becoming increasingly scared that i'll have to reinstall wxp over this silly issue. I posted on computing.net as well, and no real suggestions there too... AAAG!

Any suggestions then where I should post this? It's not really a hardware issue.
