TP-Link Powerline Adapters

Does anyone have experience with TP-Link Powerline adapters? I decided to give them a try about a month or two ago. They worked great! Got awesome speeds on my HTPC in the basement from it, both on the internet and with transferring files/streaming over the network.

Today I was trying to copy files from my desktop to the HTPC over the network (desktop is wireless, HTPC connects via Powerline adapter). After just a few seconds the file copy speed would drop to 0MB/Sec and all clients on the home network would lose network/internet connectivity.

Needless to say, I've narrowed it down to the powerline adapters. I can copy to the HTPC when it's not using the Powerline. I tried upgrading the firmware on the powerline adapters, but the latest one is from August of 2013 and it didn't make any difference.

The set I have are the TP-PL4010KIT. If anyone has any suggestions, I'm willing to listen. Otherwise I'll RMA these to TP-Link.

Aw Tim, you care :p

They approved an RMA for me after I told them I'm a network engineer and know how a network should work, and this clearly wasn't working right. I shipped it out Monday.

Allow me to share the emails:

I bought my powerline kit about two months ago. Until today it has worked perfectly. Today when trying to copy files to a PC on the powerline network, it would drop to 0 MB/Sec during transfer, and cause connectivity issues to everyone on the network. I can copy to the PC fine when it is not using the powerline adapter. The firmware is at the latest version. I would like to RMA these for a replacement.
Thanks,
Travis

Hi Travis,
Thank you very much for your e-mail requesting information about our product.

May I know which transfer tool are you using?
Do you mean you want to copy from a PC connecting to TL-PA4010 to another PC connecting to the router?
Is the Internet working with them? What is the status of lights?

Hello,

I am simply copying files from one computer to another over the network using file explorer windows. I have done this before when I first got the adapters and did not have any issues.

The computer can get internet access without an issue.

The activity light blinks normally with the power and network lights solid.

The two adapters came as a kit. The S/N of the kit is *SN*.

Thanks,
Travis

Hi Travis ,
Thank you very much for your email requesting information about our product.

1)Please check the indicator again for I can't verify whether the middle indicator like House light is blank or on.
then give me the information.

2) Is it working fine if you hook up your computer to the powerline adapter by ethernet cable at the same time you don't use the file explorer to transfer your files ?

3) How about the speed of file explorer transmitting if you hook up your computer to your router directly.

4) How to you hook up your two computers when you do the file explorer transmitting ? one is connected to the TL-PA4010 and the other one is connected to your router or the other TL-PA4010 ?

5) Have you downloaded the Utility to test the speed between the two powerline adapters ? Please give me the speed screenshot of the utility when you do the file explorer transmitting.

Waiting for your reply.

As I said in previous emails:

The middle indicator light (the activity light) flashes.

The power line adapter works fine when not transferring files.

File transfers work normally if I bypass the Powerline adapters and connect directly to the router. The speed is about 50MB/s over the network.

One power line adapter is connected to the router via ethernet. The other power line is connected from the wall to the computer.

I don’t want to continue this round-about troubleshooting. I work in IT as a network engineer. I know how networks are supposed to work and this product is not working correctly.

I kindly request that I be issued an RMA number so that I can exchange these adapters.

LOL Don't you just hate that crap? They always have you go through a run around as if you don't know jack. I get this same shit with Comcrap. Please reset this or that and then you know what their magic cure all is? A reset ping from their office. LMAO! *shakes head* Never ends.

I loathe companies that think you're stupid.
