Tracking from comcast...

My friend got cought for torinting (so dont do it! unless it is legal like downloading fedora core) a movie. Comcast e-mailed him and told him about it. Do they track you or do they have something that detects something and alerts them. Also he told me (after i told him they do look) that all his friends do it for years and nothing happend. Does this mean they only track some people or what. Can some one clear this up with me...


When i meen a friend i meen it. it was not me. Just for the record :P
 
they track by ip. when you're downloading you're uploading and thats how your ip is shown the the public. they go after seeds so probably you feel asleep and the thing is done and you're contantly uploading.

As i have stated previously in a comcast thread i work for them and yes we do sniff when you exceed a certain amount of bandwith. I'm not going to tell you how much but we do watch when it hits a certain amount we do get on you. Seriously people its a 10 dollar movie just go buy it its not worth the fbi showing up and getting hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines sheesh... p.s always read the fine print on your contract. If we think you are doing something illegal we have full authority according to our contract to sniff and see what you are doing becuase we are just as liable as you are.

contracts dont superseed legislation ;), but in this case there is nothing illegal about sniffing these packets as they are really only interested in the header and there's nothing illegal about sitting on a torrent and recording IPs.
Oh and comcast is not liable for the activities on its user PROVIDED they take a few simple procedures to cover there backs. Sniffing, traffic shaping, bandwidth capping, torrent tracking are all over and above the requirements to discharge there responsibility.

Regardless the downloading of copyright material is illegal. I allow this thread to stay open as Im keen for the position to be made clear on this and people to be aware of the risk they take when downloading
 
Does comcast look to see if it is legal. Like the secont day fedora 7 came out, the only way to get it is by torrent. I dont see it being illegal because the web site was trying to get you to use it and it is open source. So does comcast after seeing that you are torrintin look at what youy are torrinting?
