tracking source of spyware

If I've got spyware on my machine, is there anyway to identify who's spying on me? For example, an IP address?

Spyware is a pretty broad term? What are you infected with and how do you know?

It's actually not me, it's for a friend. She asked me if there was any software out there to detect if there was anyone spying on her or hacking into her machine. I'm not sure what she has. I told her I'd do some research.
