Trading CPU

I have an intel celeron D 2.5ghz and my dad has a pentium 4 2.9ghz. Could I just pop out his pentium and my celeron and switch PC's so that I would have the pentium and he would have the celeron? Our mobos are combatable, Im just wondering if I would have to do some stuff in the BIOS like change clock speeds or would it be pritty much plug and play?
 
If they are the same socket than I'm pretty sure the motherboard would automatically recognize a change in CPU.
 
Well, maybe a BIOS update on one of the machines...maybe.

You will want to clear CMOS before installing new processor. It might not register with the new CPU and give u annoying beeps till' you do.

IF you are positive they are both compatible nad it will work, most work I can see happening is clearing CMOS and *maybe* BIOS update.
 
Crud, I was hoping that I wouldnt have to do enything but pull them out. Well might as well ask,

I have looked at my mobo manual and it says to reset the cmos I pull out a pin and put it back but that it will ask for a boot up disk, Would this be a my windows disk? And how would I do a bios update?
 
nope, no disks, as for the bios, check your mobo manafactures site, i say clear the CMOS shit and swap them and hope for the best
 
system disk? no way. jsut pull the power to the board, reset the jumper, swap CPU's, and boot. should be fine.

BIOS update was only an idea, doubt it will be needed if they are truly supported.
 
Er, hehe, I think you misunderstood my first question. My manual says

"To reset bios remove jumper and place on pins 1-2 then move jumper back to original settings, you WILL be asked for a disk"
(as in my computer will pop up and say "insert disk")

What is this disk?

There shouldn't be a disk to ask for. I've reset CMOS on many computers...and it's never asked for a disk.

I'm thinking your manual is wrong. Trust me, my manual is wrong in ALOT of areas lmao.
 
Ok, Ill do a test cmos reset with my own cpu tomarow and if all goes well I will switch them.

I doubt you will even need to reset the bios. Just put in the new cpu and boot, the cmos will detect the parameters for the new chip. A cmos reset will only be needed it you have overclocked in the past.

The p4 will almost certainly work in the mobo currently using the celeron D
however a bios update may be required for the celeron D to work in the mobo currently using the p4.

best thing to do is to lauch bios, tell us the motherboard make and model and the bios version and you should be able to look it up online before trying anything
 
if its a fairly new board then i would bet its compatible with a p4 and a celeron. With my machine, i popped in a 3Ghz P4 and took out my 2.4Ghz Celeron D. so i bet it would work.
 
Ok Ill check out both our bios versions and our mobos. And his cpu and mobo are newer so it should be combatable with my celeron. And accualy I dont think he would notice but im gunna ask him if he would be alright with it.

"hey dad, your cpu has a better PPU for games and mine has a better...um...graphics accelorator. Would it be alright if we traded?"

Lol. Accualy thats like 90% true. And I just looked up our bios versions. Apperently I have

sr84510b.44t.0042.p09

and he has

va84510a.86a.0045.p16

Im looking it up right now, oh and Im not quite sure of his mobo but mine is.

d845gvsr Motherboard

And he has some insignia d300a pc.
 
I just realized that my system bus speed is 533mhz and his is 400mhz. Also my sytem memory speed is 333mhz and his is 266. I cant overclock on either of these computers. So is it accualy worth it to trade on the cpus?I heard pentiums are better for gaming but my speeds are faster. Will the speed of his cpu automaticaly go up to the settings I have now? Or down to the settings that he has?

Are you syure on tall of those specs? I don't think the P4 would be less then the Celeron, and Celerons work like crap though, so it still might be worth it. I would say it would also depend on how much ram you do have.

Another thing, isn't that kind of...well...jerksihand not the mention selfish? to the people who feed, shelter and love you?(most likly)
 
100% sure on those specs, And we both have 512 ram. Now that is true it is kinda selfish but it is equivalent exchange. He has the newer ram, mobo, DVD-RW, hard drive, and power supply/case. So instead of one pc being great and one being not so great, we will be closer to even. But his still will be better, unless I upgrade but in that case I would be paying for it.
 
I was gonna swap processors with my mom's laptop for the longest time (hers: 2400+ XP-M mine: 2600+ XP-M) just to see if her processor could take some extreme overclocking, maybe more so than mine. but then i figured if i toasted hers, she would keep mine, and i already know mine is pretty good. so i never did :-/
 
I have been thinking if I shouldnt, and maybe I wont. His clock speeds are very poor compared to what I have so I dont know at the moment.
