Transfer data from XP HDD to Vista 'permission' problems

I've got a new Dell vista laptop after the old (evesham xp) one gave up suddenly. To recover the evesham data I got the HDD removed & placed in an external HDD box so it could just be connected to the Dell by USB 2.0 & I could copy the files across ('my documents' stuff not massive program files).

problem is when I view the HDD on the Dell vista & try to open any folder to copy a file it says I need permission from the administrators - but I have the only user account on the dell so must be an administrator. I've managed to overcome this on a few folder/files by right clicking > properties > security > (click through many 'windows needs permission to continue stuff) > change owner to admin > disconnect & reconnect external HDD

However this only works if I do it for each individual file; is there any way I can change the owner of everything on the HDD to me & stop all this permission problems?

Thanks, ask for anymore info :)

I've right-clicked the HDD and set the security to allow me to do everything except 'special permission' (just because it wouldn't allow me to).
I also highlighted all the subfolder & tried to cancel 'read-only' on everything which it allowed me to do on everything except my old user area (there were multiple users on the old laptop)

so now I can copy & use the files on everyones old user area except mine. Could this be because I was the only user on the evesham to put a password on my user area? anyway to over-right this
