transfer data to new computer?

Hi all-
I've got a computer that just died on me and needs replacing (bad motherboard). I know this is a newbie question, but I need help transfering data from that hard drive to a new computer. What is the easiest, quickest, and cheapest way to transfer data from that dead computer to a new one? I haven't bought the new one but will do so later today (probably an HP-the old computer is an emachine). Also, I run several specialized programs (Pendragon, ARCview, stats programs) that have propietary data formats and/or multi-user licenses. What kinds of problems will I encounter trying to access data from those programs?
Thanks very much, in advance-
Sincerely-
Eric

You have a few options:

-Plug the old HD into the new computer as a slave, use as storage.. or emove when done. Price ($0) time (5min)

-Get an external HD enclosure and usb the HD into the new computer Price (15$-25$) time (5-10min)

If the computer was working (which i dont think it is), you could share/network it.

I'd just pop the drive in the new machine as a slave and copy everything like that. However, programs will need to be reloaded. Without knowing what the programs are, I can't really help, but worst case, you might have to contact the companies and explain your problem... That's if say the keys don't work on your new computer or something like that... Usally, though, such things aren't an issue.
