When Itunes opens up and you connect your Ipod you will see a dialog box with your Ipod showing. From here navigate to where it says "manually manage music and videos" and check the box next to it. This will stop Itunes from auto-syncing with your library of music.

To add music simple drag and drop the files from the main music folder in Itunes to the Ipod that is connected.

i'll give you a step by step guide, you will be kicking yourself because it's so simple.

1. Plug in your ipod. itunes will automatically open. If it doesn;t open it.
2. The ipod you plugged in will show up on itunes, ignore it, click on "music" at the side
3. Any tracks that you want to put onto the ipod, drag and drop across, so you get a song, drag it to the ipod symbol and name on the left. You will notice it will go from a file icon on your curser with a cross, to a file icon with the number of songs as you go from the music list to over the ipod
4. The music is now on your ipod

To delte music from the ipod:

1. click on "music" under the ipod logo and name on the left, not the "music" at the top.
2. It will show all of the music on the devicce. Click on the song(s) you want to delete and press delete. You will be asked if you are sure, click yes, it is now gone

Unfortunately you cannot take music from an ipod and put it on a computer because the ipod changes the file names and folders on the ipod (not on your system), so don't try or start looking it up, you will waste your time, just like yours truely did, just to find huge dissapointment

guys this is the problem, when i try to drag and drop music within Itunes it doesnt do anything.

damn itunes is crap.

ive googled round for Itune alternative and found 2 apps, neither of them worked

im starting too not like Apple.

be careful using these 3rd party things. I used yamipod to copy music from my friends iPod to his pc and I let him copy mine too. When we turned our iPods on later none of the content was viewable but the music was playable on the pc. The files were still on the iPod. I could tell that because in the information thing on the iPod it showed that it had a lot of data and it couldn't tell if it was music or not. It classed it all as 'other'.

But it did warn me when I first plugged it in saying that it was synced using an older iTunes. So it might work now days but yea, be careful!

Did you set in iTunes to manually put music on the iPod?

Did you try what I explained. That worked for me on my Ipod Video.

what format is the ipod in? If it is in mac format your Windows PC can't write to HFS+ file systems, which is something that you won't be able to get around until you format that thing for FAT32

according to vista its in FAT32 file system

Is it already paired with another computer?

Itunes has that whole authorize and deauthorize thing with their ipods. You may just want to restore it, update any firmware that is out for it, wipe it clean, then try.
