Transfering Files from wormed comp?

Hey guys. Found out my old comp may have a worm on it. I've decided to just go ahead and reformat it to give to my parents who could use the comp.

I'm transferring the files I want to keep to an external hard drive but I want to make sure its clean before I bring it over to my newest computer. What is the best way to make sure nothing decided to "hitch" a ride on my external hard drive with the files I copied over?

Scan those files that you are wanting to transfer with a virus scanner and malware scanner.
